Kettering

February 12, 2016 by Laura Bettinger

Kettering is home! This lively community has much to offer its residents and local businesses. Whether you enjoy parks, art galleries, music or food, you can find it here.

History

The Village of Kettering was established in 1952 by the voters of Van Buren Township.  It was named for its most prominent resident, Charles F. Kettering, inventor of the automobile self-starter.  In 1955, the Secretary of Ohio proclaimed Kettering a city.

Life Today

Kettering takes up almost 340 square miles south of Dayton and is home to over 56,000 residents.  Residences vary greatly and include Ranch and traditional style homes, as well as condos and townhouses.  The City of Kettering provides an abundance of services to their residences beyond public safety, waste collection and snow removal.  Be sure to check the city’s website for the full list.

The options for local schools include both public and private.  The Kettering Fairmont School District consists of one high school, two middle schools, eight elementary schools, and an early childhood education center.  In the private realm, there are St. Charles Borromeo Elementary, St. Albert the Great Elementary, Ascension Elementary, Archbishop Alter High School, the Dayton Regional STEM School, and the Montessori School of Dayton.

If you’re interested in parks and recreation, Kettering has 21 parks around town!  You may fish in any of four ponds located at Delco Park, Lincoln Park, Pondview Park, and the Kettering Recreation Complex (KRC).  For the little ones, try the Kettering Park Splash Pad in the warmer months and the Kettering Ice Arena in the winter.  There’s swimming in the main pool at the KRC and at the Adventure Reef Water Park.  Check out the fitness centers at the KRC and the Kettering Fitness & Wellness Center.  Both locations offer open gyms as well as organized classes.  All Kettering facilities are open to the public for a fee, which is discounted for Kettering residents.

Polen Farm is a great venue for weddings, family reunions, or gatherings of any type.  You’ll also want to look in to the Fraze Pavilion, an open-air amphitheater, which hosts musicians and other acts throughout the summer.  Here you’ll find big names and local talent.  Rosewood Art Gallery if open to the public for viewing and offers courses of various types.
