Upcoming Events: February 15, 2019

February 15, 2019 by Laura Bettinger Leave a Comment

Happy Friday, Dayton! While it still feels very much winter, I am super excited about how much more light we’re getting! (PS: Daylight Savings starts in T-minus 3 weeks, and I’m definitely counting!) As the days continue getting longer that will mean more time to enjoy our local events! Here’s a list of what’s going on around the Gem City this weekend:

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “The King and I”

Get tickets for tonight’s performance or choose from one of the other performance times this weekend. This Broadway classic is currently running at the Schuster Center downtown. While you’re there stop at one of the many great local eateries for a meal before or after your show.

Two worlds collide in this “breathtaking and exquisite” (The New York Times) musical, based on the 2015 Tony Award-winning Lincoln Center Theater production. One of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s finest works, THE KING AND I boasts a score that features such beloved classics as “Getting to Know You,” “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Hello Young Lovers,” “Shall We Dance” and “Something Wonderful.” Set in 1860s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children. THE KING AND I is “too beautiful to miss” (New York Magazine).

Miami Valley Orchid Society Annual Orchid Show & Sale

The Miami Valley Orchid Society’s Annual Show & Sale is this Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm, and is held at the Cox Arboretum. The show will feature exhibits from several states, include hundreds of award-winning flowering orchid plants arranged in a variety of creative exhibits, as well as, presentations on basic orchid culture each day. There will also be a great line up of quality vendors offering a diversity of orchids, pottery, photographs, and other orchid-related items for sale.  The show is an American Orchid Society judged show which plants judged at both the local and international level.   Members of the Miami Valley Orchid Society will be on hand to answer questions about growing orchids. We are excited to once again be one of the vendors in our hometown event!  For more information on the show, please contact the Miami Valley Orchid Society directly.

WinterFolk Festival

Join us for the SIXTH annual WinterFolk Fest at the ‘Old’ Yellow Cab Building, Saturday from 7 pm to midnight. A night of ‘Music, Art, Food, & Fun for ALL ages.’ This year we will once again have nonstop music all night and three of the area’s fantastic visual artists on hand displaying and selling their artwork. Harvest Mobile Cuisine, with its farm-fresh comfort food, will be on hand to fill your belly and craft beer & cocktails are available to those 21 & up with proper ID.

We are again thrilled to announce that this year’s event will have a variety of local artisans selling their handmade goods!! Keep an eye on this event’s discussion page to learn more about all of the musicians, artists, and vendors participating. We look forward to another wonderful evening of friends, family, and community. See you there!

Turkish Food Festival

Once again you will have an opportunity to taste delicious food at #TurkishFoodFestival on Sunday, February 17, 2019, between 11 am and 4 pm at the Turkish American Society Dayton Community center located 2601 E 4th Street. This is an indoor activity.

The Day Lincoln Spoke in Dayton

Please join us for this special enactment of Abraham Lincoln by
Jim Crabtree in full period dress, depicting Lincoln in 1859. After he
delivered the speech against the expansion of slavery at the old courthouse in Dayton, the name of Lincoln was first publicly mentioned for the Presidency of the United States, and the speech was recognized as the opening salvo in what eventually became a nationwide struggle over slavery. This FREE event will be held Sunday afternoon at 1 pm at the Wright Memorial Library in Oakwood. It is hosted by the Wright Library and the Oakwood Historical Society.

Did we miss anything?

There’s lot going on this weekend, so hopefully you’ll find something that strikes your fancy! However, if you have an event you’d like for us to include, be sure to leave it in the comments below or visit our contact page to tell us about it!
